Description of Eleazar Albin's Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux
This beautiful bird print is from Eleazar Albin's Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux published in 1735-1750. Natural History of Birds was an important contribution to ornithology; it was the first British bird book to use coloured plates. The work contains native British species, as well as a few strays from distant regions which were brought to Albin's attention by bird enthusiants or placed in British taverns as curiosities. The proportions of the birds are a large improvement over early bird books produced with the same species. These prints are a large paper copy. The paper is chain-linked and watermarked, measuring ~9 1/4" by 11 5/16".
