John J. Audubon's Birds of America First Edition

These fine Audubon prints come from Birds of America, the Royal Octavo Edition (1840-44),  an AUTHENTIC FIRST EDITION completed under the direct supervision of John James Audubon himself.  This edition of Audubons was lithographed and hand-colored from 1840-1844 by J.T. Bowen.  It is the only octavo edition of Audubons that was done using strictly hand coloring.  The most distinguishing feature between this first edition and later editions is the color printed blue-green tint background that Bowen added to later editions. These are some of the best examples of hand-colored work in America and are highly collectable.  They are on fine heavy stock paper that is ~6 7/8" by 10 1/2".
