Description of J.J. Audubon's The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, Imperial Edition
After having depicted all known birds of North America, John James Audubon endeavored to depict all the known species of North American mammals. Audubon went on his final drawing exhibition on the Missouri River in the summer of 1843 with his son John Woodhouse Audubon. Considered to be Audubon’s last major accomplishment, the prints were published from 1845 to 1848 by the distinguished Philadelphia printmaker, J.T. Bowen. Known in the trade as the Imperials, the detailed images measured 22” x 28” inches untrimmed. No subsequent Imperial editions were likely printed. We acquired the prints in their original walnut frames, measuring 31" by 39". They have been matted with 100% rag mat, and backed with museum-quality backing.
