Description of John James Audubon's The Quadrupeds of North America - Lockwood Edition

These well-known lithographs are from the work Quadrupeds of North America by John James Audubon.  The famous work has been printed in many editions.  The prints here are from the 4th printing conducted by John Woodhouse Audubon (John James's son) and Roe Lockwood  in 1870.  Lockwood's involvement has led this edition to commonly be known as the Lockwood Edition. These stone lithographs printed in color while the animal, botanical, and other depictions were all hand-colored by W.E. Hitchcock and R. Trembley after illustrations made by John James and John Woodhouse Audubon.   Audubon stayed with Lutheran clergyman Bachman in his home in Charleston in 1831; their friendship grew following the marriage of Audubon's sons to Bachman's daughters.  Audubon was eager to work on the Quadruped project though Bachman was hesitant. The Reverend later gave in on the condition that Audubon's sons would retain the profits. By 1835 Bachman became indispensable to the project writing most of the text and doing the editing.  They are on fine woven paper that measures ~10 1/4" by 7".
