Description
W. H. Bartlett's American Scenery
These fine steel engravings with original hand-coloring, are from the work American Scenery or Land, Lake, and River, Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature. William Henry Bartlett, a well-known British Landscape artist traveled the blossoming United States many times, following routes popular with tourists around New England, and Mid-Atlantic areas. His drawings were turned into these stunning engravings by several very talented engravers, including R. Wallis, J. Cousen, Willmore, Brandard, Adlard, Richardson, and others. N. P. Willis, an American writer, provided detailed descriptions and historical facts about the places illustrated by Bartlett. The work was first published in parts until November 1839. In January 1840, the entire work was released in 2 volumes, from which these prints here come. The fame of these images has been long-lived, as it is often imitated and is still among the most popular of early American imagery.
