Marc Bloch's Ichthyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particuliere des Poisson

These famous hand-colored engravings come the work entitled Ichthyologie, ou Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particuliere des Poissons.  It is known as "... the finest illustrated work on fishes ever produced. The plates, by a variety of artists and engravers, are outstandingly coloured, and are heightened with gold, silver, and bronze to produced the metallic sheen of fish scales."  (Nissen)  Authored by Marc Elieser Bloch, it was published from 1785-1797 in Berlin.  Bloch began his career as a medical doctor, redirecting his attention to the study of fish later in his life.  After collectiong several local species and others through correspondence, Bloch produced this fine work which illustrated and described over 200 species of fish.  They are on very nice chain-linked, watermarked paper that measures ~17 1/2" by 10 3/4".
