Description of Rigobert Bonne and G. Raynal's Atlas , de Toutes les Parties Connues du Globe Terrest
These historic maps are from the work entitled Atlas, de Toutes les Parties Connues du Globe Terrestre published in 1780. The work was officially authored by Guillaume Thomas Francois Raynal, a dismissed Parisian priest who wrote several controversial works supporting the American colonies in their right to revolt and withhold taxes. Rigobert Bonne, a Royal Hydrographer known best for his marine charts, created the copper engravings found in the work. However, using his privileged royal connections he was able to improve on land maps for other works, which were, up to that time, concentrated mostly on rivers. These maps are an excellent example of Bonne's detail, including wonderfully historic information about Indians and their villages, European settlements, and the extensive river systems of the country. They are on fine chain-linked paper that measures ~ 15" by 10" and up.
