Description
Vincenzo Maria Coronelli's America Settentrionale
America Settentrionale, by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli (1650-1718) is one of the most desirable maps of North America. Published in Vinice in 1688, it utilized the most current information available at the time. While the Mississippi River is much too far to the west, and California is still shown as an island, the map contains the best rendering of the Great Lakes to that date. The map depicts Canada, the Caribean, Northern Brazil and contains ornamental cartouches, ships and narwhals.
Coronelli was an Italian Franciscan who was known for making supurb globes. A master of cartography, Coronelli founded the very first geographical society, the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He also held the position of Cosmographer of the Republic of Venice.
There is a central vertical fold, one horizontal crease, repaired verso and minor sporadic browning. It is on fine chain-linked paper measuring 25" by 36 ½".
