Description

Jonathan Couch's A History of the Fishes of the British Islands

These prints are from the four-volume work entitled A History of the Fishes of the British Islands by Jonathan Couch. The work was originally published between 1862 and 1868. The prints here are from a later publication date in the 1870s by George Bell & Sons in London.

Combining his education as a medical doctor with his love of natural history, Couch studied the local wildlife of his hometown Polperro, England quite extensively. This work is known as his greatest publication and is of considerable importance to the studies of ichthyology. He took great care to record the fish accurately by keeping them submersed in water so as to retain their natural color.
