Pieter Cramer's Papillons Exotiques

These beautiful, exotic butterfly prints are from the first edition of the work De Uitlandsche Kapellan Voorkomende in de drie Waereld-Deelen Asia, Africa en America... Papillons Exotiques des trois parties du Monde l'Asie, L'Afrique et l'Amerique. The work was published in Amsterdam between 1775 and 1791.

This work is celebrated as the first book of exotic butterflies arranged according to the Linnean method. The work cataloged over 1700 species on 440 plates. Pieter Cramer, a merchant in Spanish wool with a great interest in butterflies, was the primary author. However, he died in 1777, before the work was finished and Casper Stoll completed the project. Gerrit Lambertz was the commissioned colorist for the work.

The prints are on fine watermarked, chain-link paper measuring approximately 9" by 11 3/4".
