Description of Edward Donovan's The Naturalist's Repository
These colorful engravings come from The Naturalist's Repository or Miscellany of Exotic Natural History Exhibiting Rare and Beautiful Specimens of Foreign Birds, Insects, Shells by Donovan published in 1834 in London. This work is especially focused on new subjects, those that had not before been described. The hand-coloring found on Donovan prints is extraordinary. The colors are so deep and detailed that it is sometimes difficult to see the engraved lines underneath. They are on woven paper that measures ~ 9 1/2" by 6".
