Description
Thomas Doughty's Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports
Thomas Doughty is best known as the founder of the Hudson River School of painters. However, in his days before this prestigious position, he was the author and chief contributing artist of the 3-volume work entitled Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports. He and his brother John produced this work featuring hand-colored lithorgraphs, many of which were drawn by notable artists including Charles Willson Peale, T. R. Peale, M.E.D. Brown, George Leham, and J.G. Clonney. Childs and Inman's Press of Philadelphia published the three volumes in 1830, 1832, and 1833 respectively. This work is considered the first American Color-Plate Sporting Book and it includes John Sartain’s “Common Deer”(plate 1), one of his earliest pieces done in America. They are on fine, heavy stock paper that measures 11" by 9".
