Description of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology
These fine hand-colored engravings are from the work entitled Illustrations of Exotic Entomology by Dru Drury (1725-1803). The work was originally published in 1770-1782 under a different title. This print is from a "New Edition" by John O. Westwood and was published in London in 1837. Drury was one of the best known entomologists of his time and was even known to have corresponded with other greats such as Linnaeus. Westwood was also a well-known entomologist who found joy in the Victorian culture of making the study of natural history accessible. Great attention was given to the hand-coloring found in Exotic Entomology, which contains "upwards of six hundred and fifty figures and descriptions of foreign insects." They are on fine woven paper that measures ~ 8 1/4" by 10 3/4".
