Description of Jean Fortin's Altas Céleste de Flamsteed
These historic engraved celestial maps are from the work Atlas Céleste de Flamsteed by Jean Fortin published in 1795. As the title name indicates, this work is based on the monumental Atlas Coelestis published by the First Royal Astronomer John Flamsteed in 1729. This Atlas Céleste is the second French edition (the first was published in 1776). It is also known as the third edition of Flamsteed's original work, which was much larger in size. Fortin's 1795 revision includes a constellation named after Abbe Poczobut from Vilnato to honour king Stanislaus Poniatowski of Poland on plate 10. They are on fine chain-linked paper that measures ~ 10 1/2" by 8 5/8".
