Description of William Hayes Portraits of the Curious Exotic Birds
These striking hand-colored etchings are from William Hayes's Portraits of the Curious Exotic Birds. This particular edition is quite rare as it was published in 1817, after Hayes's death, "for the benefit of his family." Hayes was an ornithological artist who enjoyed depicting "Curious and Exotic" birds as well as the more common British varieties. Several members of his family, including at least 7 of his children, were employed in the production of his works. They are on fine, woven paper that measures ~ 9 1/4" by 12".
