Description of William Hooker's Icones Filicum
These beautiful ferns are hand-colored engravings come from the work entitled Icones Filicum by William Hooker. Hooker was a renowned English botanist in the 19th century. Throughout his years, he made many botanical expeditions, namely to Iceland, France, Switzerland, and Italy. After these explorations, Hooker published and edited numerous botanical references, which set his reputation as a botanist. One such reference is this Icones Filicum which he published in connection with Robert Greville in London in 1829-1831. The paper is woven with a "J Whatman" watermark and measures ~ 16 1/2" by 10 1/2".
