Description of Kelmscott Press's Works of Geoffrey Chaucer

These fanciful engravings are from The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer published by the Kelmscott Press in 1896. William Morris, publisher and founder of the Kelmscott Press ,was displeased with the low-quality books being circulated at that time. Using modern techniques and technology, he printed this elite copy of Chaucer's Works to resemble the masterful books printed centuries before. To fully capture the essence of old world printing, Morris employed the use of highly decorative lettering, as well as a flouish of vines and flowers framing the pages and occasional red type. Edward Burne-Jones designed the engravings for the work which was edited by F.S. Ellis and W. W. Skeat.
