Description of Johann Simon Kerner's Abbildung aller Oekonamischen Pflanzen...

These spectacular hand-colored engravings are from the 8-volume work entitled Abbildung aller Oekonamischen Pflanzen by Johann Simon Kerner published in Stuttgart, Germany from 1786-1796. The title (translated: Image of All Economical Plants) refers to those plants with a significant use such as fruits, herbs, and other foods, and those used in medicine, dyeing, etcetera. Kerner, a botanical artist and botanist at Wurttenmberg Carl's Universität, drew and etched each plate himself. According to the short list of subscribers, only 100 copies of this rare work were ever issued. They are on fine chain-linked, watermarked paper that measures ~ 9 1/8" by 11 1/8".
