Description of George Wolfgang Knorr's Shells
These detailed engravings are from George Wolfgang Knorr's work entitled Les Delices es Yeux Et De L'Espirit published from 1764-1773. "Knorr (1705-1761) was one of the leading protogeologists of the eighteenth century as well as a highly competent engraver. Nearly one thousand shells are depicted in this work. The plates are all extremely well drawn and beautifully painted." (Dance, A History of Shell Collecting, p. 50). They are on fine chain linked, watermarked paper that measures ~ 8 1/8" by 10 1/2".
