Description

Thomas Landseer's Twenty Engravings of Lions, Tigers, Panthers, and Leopards

These fine engravings are from Thomas Landseer's work Twenty Engravings of Lions Tigers Panthers & Leopards published in London in 1823. Thomas Landseer was the son of engraver John George Landseer, and elder brother of well-known painter Edwin Landseer and lesser-known artist Charles Landseer. Thomas reproduced several of Edwin's paintings as engravings with great detail, "and in these he managed to catch not only the spirit, but the style in which they were painted, almost reproducing in his plate the touches of the brush." (New York Times Obituary Jan 21, 1880) Several of the plates in this work Twenty Engravings of Lions Tigers Panthers & Leopards are reproduced paintings by various painters including George Stubbs, Peter Paul Rubens, William Spilsbury, and Rembrandt in which his engraving talent shines through. They are on laid paper.
