William Lewin's The Birds of Great Britian
These hand-colored engravings are from the beautiful ornithological collection by William Lewin entitled The Birds of Great Britian. It was published from 1789-1794, in London and printed for J.Johnson, in St. Paul's Church-Yard. Lewin (1747-1795) was originally an illustrator but later turned to natural history art. The entire collection contains 271 bird prints and 52 eggs. Lewin worked with his three sons, Thomas, Thomas William and John William to create these wonderful plates, credited individually on the respected plates. The birds are portrayed in active natural poses. They are on fine woven paper that measures ~ 9" by 11 1/4". The plate marks measure ~5 1/2" by 6 3/4".
