Description of John Lindley's The Pomological Magazine
These detailed, hand-colored engravings are from the first edition of The Pomological Magazine published by John Lindley. Lindley was well-known to the horticultural community of Great Britain. While serving as the secretary of Royal Horticultural Society, he was deeply involved in the breeding and culture of fruits growing in that country. Together with Augusta Withers, Lindley produced this work from 1828-1830. Though women often were not considered talented enough to be artists, Withers held her position in the face of such unfounded prejudices. She was Flower Painter in Ordinary to Queen Adelaide of England and even received public praise for her abilities from John Loudon in his Gardener's Magazine in 1831. These prints feature very detailed engravings enhanced by wonderfully rich original hand-coloring. They are on fine paper that measures ~ 6 3/8" by 10".
