Description of Jane Loudon's The Ladies' Flower Garden of Ornmental Annuals
These wonderful hand-colored lithographs are from Jane Loudon's work entitled The Ladies' Flower Garden of Ornamental Annuals published in 1840. This was one of Mrs. Loudon's well-known botanical works, following her fictional writing career. Her botanical works, inspired by her husband's life-long work in the field, were written in a clear, less technical manner than many others of the time and featured handsome bouquets of various garden flowers. The personal nature of her works appealed to the public, encouraging sales of the books and her popularity in the world of horticultural authors. The hand-coloring on these prints is original and features gum-arabic on many. They are on fine, heavy stock paper that measures ~ 8 1/2" by 10 3/4".
