Description of H. Lucas's Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres Exotiques

These original hand-colored engravings are from Hippolyte Pierre Lucas's work Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres Exotiques. The work was published in Paris in 1835. The plates here are from the first edition which depicted almost 400 different butterflies. Three editions were published.

Lucas started working as an apprentice for the Zoological laboratory in the Paris Museum of Natural History when he was thirteen. This work was completed by the time Lucas was 20. The noted artist & engraver, Pauquet, contributed to this work.

These prints are on fine woven paper measuring approximately 6" by 9½".
