Description of Allain Manesson Mallet's Description de L'Univers Description

These engravings are from Allain Manesson Mallet's work entitled Description de L'Univers published by Thierry in Paris in 1683. Mallet's description of the Universe opens with the sky, noting several theories including those of Copernic and Ticho. He then sails around the world, creating an atlas that illustrates our world not only by maps and charts but also marks the importance of the peoples of the world, their way of living, and the cities they've built. Mallet captured the universe, as he perceived it, in all its splendor, creating a time capsule of the world and her people. These prints are on fine chain-lined, watermarked paper that measures ~ 5 1/2" by 8 1/4". The text on the verso of most of the prints does not describe that print, but the one after it. We offer the option to add hand-color to any of the Mallet prints you purchase for a flat fee of $25 (contact us if you wish to have a print colored.) We have already added color to a few prints, and examples can be seen in the following offerings.
