Description of Robert R. McIan's The Clans of the Scottish Highlands
These delightful hand-colored lithographs are from the work entitled The Clans of the Scottish Highlands by Robert Ronald McIan and James Logan published in 1845 in London. In the 1840s, McIan left his life in the theater to pursue painting. A lucky meeting led him to James Logan, a known authority of Scottish Clan history. Together, the two created this work to celebrate the centenary of the 1745 Jacobite Uprising. It is believed that McIan's acting associates posed for the illustrations, and that he took some artistic license in creating them. Nevertheless, it is an invaluable resource for any Scottish enthusiast. They are on fine woven paper that measures ~ 10 1/4" by 14 1/4".
