This rare world map, Universalis Tabula Iuxta Ptolemaeum, by Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) is from the Ptolemy Atlas (1578). There are 12 named wind-heads beautifully depicted in the strapwork borders. This hand-colored, engraved map is considered "one of the most elegantly engraved of the Ptolemaic world maps..." - Shirley. There is a central vertical fold, slight browning and surface dirt, and several handlng creases - mostly marginal. Printed on fine chain linked paper, the map measures 16 ¼" by 21".
