Description of Gerard Mercator's L'Atlas ou Meditations Cosmographiques

These stunning maps are from L'Atlas ou Meditations Cosmographiques de la Fabrique du Monde et Figure Diceluy. De nouveau reveu et aug mente, by Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius. The Mercator/Hondius atlas is one of the most important atlases in history. It was begun by Mercator in 1595, and continued by Jodocus Hondius who purchased Mercator's plates in 1604. After the first Amsterdam edition of the Mercator Atlas appeared in 1606, there were several enlarged editions in various languages printed through 1638. The maps for sale here are from the Second French Edition published in Amersterdam 1613. It was the first French edition to be published after the death of Jodocus Hondius in 1612. They are on fine, chain linked paper that measures ~ 21 3/4" by 18"(unless noted otherwise in the product description).
