Description of Henry L. Meyer's Coloured Illustrations of British Birds

These life-like, hand-colored lithographs are from the a first edition (1835-1844) of the work entitled Coloured Illustrations of British Birds and Their Eggs by Henry Leonard Meyer. Meyer was a recognized Dutch artist and naturalist. His ornithological drawings were made from nature as well as his own collection of birds. Meyer's wife aided in the engraving and possibly the actual original drawings. This work is well-known for it's beatuy: "With the possible exception of Lord Lilford's Birds, this is the finest and most complete atlas of portraits of British avifauna (with their eggs) ever published", Wood p.462. They are on fine woven paper that measures ~ 10 1/2" by 14 1/2".
