Description of Thomas Pennant's The British Zoology - Original Watercolors
These prints are from Thomas Pennant’s distinguished work entitled The British Zoology published in 1766. His travels gave him a great basis for his books. As a naturalist, he was well-known to several famous individuals in history including Carolus Linnaeus and Charles Darwin, the latter even mentioned this particular work in his own writings. Pennant’s works were known more for their ability to encourage and popularize the study of natural history rather than producing new theories and ideas. The British Zoology, his first work, confirms this talent. These beautifully executed Original Watercolors are based on the original drawings by Peter Paillou. The colors and brushstrokes are stunning and rich. The illusion of a platemark was created by painting a shadow around the image which allowed this watercolor to blend with the other engraved prints with which it was bound. It's uncertain who actually created this watercolor, but it is likely someone who worked with Mazell, possibly Paillou or even Mazell himself. However, it can be said without any doubt that this piece is a stunning and absolutely breathtaking piece of art.
