Description

Daniel Rabel's Theatrum Florae...

These beautiful prints are from Daniel Rabel's Theatrum Florae…In quo Ex toto Orbe selecti Mirabiles Venustiores ac praecipui Flores Tanquam ab Ipsus Deae sinu proferuntur Lutetiae Parisiorum Apud Nicolaum de Mathoniere, a work often considered one of the greatest florilegiums to be published in France. The prints offered here are from the first edition published in 1622 in Paris. The prints illustrate a variety of flowers, but primarily bulbous species. The Latin name of each specimen also appears. The elegant composition of each print, along with the beautiful Gouache colouring, make these prints a spectacular addition to any collection. Many of the print depict the flowers in full bloom with almost scientific realism.

Theatrum Florae was published anonymously for the first and second editions and was an immediate success. The third edition, published in 1633, was the only edition to feature Daniel Rabel's name.

Rabel was born to a painter in 1578. He enjoyed the patronage of Gaston, duc d'Orleans, a younger brother of Louis XIII. Paintings of naturalistic subjects gained greatly in popularity around this time, due in large part to Gaston's encouragement.

The prints are on fine paper measuring 10 1/4" by 15 1/2".
