Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi's Mercurio Geografico
This rare map of North America is from Mercurio Geografico by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. Based on Sanson's seminal map, this third edition shows the course of the Mississippi and the western Great Lakes. California is still shown as an island, with the west coast continued up to the Straits of Anian. Dated 1687, this edition was published in Rome in 1692. There is a central vertical fold, slight browning and several repaired short marginal tears. The map is on fine chain linked, watermarked paper and measures 18" by 23½".
