Description of Robert Sweet's The Florist's Guide
These extraordinary hand-colored engravings are from the work entitled The Florist's Guide and Cultivator's Directory by Robert Sweet. Trained as a gardener, Sweet went on to become a prominent name in the horticultural world. In 1826, he began to focus on publishing books on botanicals. This work, originally published as a periodical in London from 1827 to 1832, features some of the most sought after florist plants including Auriculas and Tulips. J. Watts created his engravings for this work based on the drawings by artist Edwin Smith. They are on fine woven, watermarked paper that measures ~ 6" by 9 3/4".
