Description of Ten Lithograpic Coloured Flowers
This anonymous work is entitled Ten Lithographic Coloured Flowers with Botanical Descriptions Drawn and Coloured by a Lady. It was printed by R.H. Nimmo and published by David Brown in Edinburgh in 1826. There are 40 plates in the work, suggesting that it was extended after the title page was issued. This copy for sale features full black straight-grain morocco binding by Bayntum-Rivière which has sides covered with decorative gilt tooled borders, a gilt panelled spine with raised bands, inner gilt dentelles, and watered silk endpapers. It also come encased in a green fitted box. Each print is accompanied by a description lithographed to resemble elegant hand-writing (click here to see an example). "A delightful work very carefully drawn and coloured and an early example of the successful use of lithography." (Dunthorne). The book itself measures 10" by 14". The individual plates are on fine woven paper and measure ~ 9" by 13 7/8".
