Description

Edouard Travies's Les Oiseaux Les Plus Remarquables

These exquisite, rare hand-colored lithographs are from the first Paris edition of one of the finest works by Edouard Travies. The work featured folio plates with bird's often shown in their natural size and habitat. This decorative, scientific work is entitled Les Oiseaux Les Plus Remarquables par leurs formes et leurs coleurs. Scenes variees de leurs moeurs & de leur habitudes.

The work was first published in 1857 in both Paris and London. The plates featured here were published in Paris by Ledot aine (or Berrieux). The work was printed "proof before letters"; meaning that the images were lithographed before the nomenclature was added. This work was often rebound as a series of plates, and thus a complete volume with title page has not been seen for sale in the past thirty years - as is the case with this plate.

Edouard Travies was undoubtedly one of the best artists of the 1800's. Travies created beautiful lithographs as well as adding his own hand-coloring. He created plates that showed the animal in their natural state, but paid attention to the details and beauty of the bird's surroundings.

They are on fine, heavy stock woven paper that measures approximately 21 ¼" by 15".
