Description
James Veitch's Hortus Veitchii
These interesting photogravures are from the book published by the famous nursery firm of James Veitch & Sons, Chelsea, and London in 1906 entitled Hortus Veitchii: A History of the Rise and Progress of the Nurseries of Messrs. James Veitch and Sons…. The nursery was founded by James Veitch in 1808. For the next 162 years, when the last remaining location sold to another nursery firm in 1969, the Veitch name held considerable importance in the nursery industry. The family owned nursery was operated by 5 succeeding generations of Veitchs, with eleven family members propelling the firm to its place in history. The Veitch Nursery is most noted for the incredible numbers of newly discovered plants from around the world and newly bred plants which they introduced.
Photogravure is a process in which a photographic image is created from an engraving. The result is a print which has the "subtlety of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph." (http://www.curtis-collection.com/process.html)
