Description of Ambroise Verschaffelt and Charles Lemaire's L'Illustration Horticole

These colorful chromolithographs are from L'Illustration Horticole Journal Spécial des Serres et des Jardins... This great Belgian periodical was founded by Ambroise Verschaffelt in 1854, and continued to be published for over 40 years. From 1854-1869, it was published under the supervision of editor Charles Lemaire. Verschaffelt was a member of the established Verschaffelt Family nursery and well-known for his horticultural knowledge. Lemaire, botanist and professor, edited the work for 16 years, during which time it gained great popularity, especially in the European pursuit of new plants and cultivars. In 1869, Jean Jules Linden purchased the Verschaffelt Establishment and replaced Lemaire with Éduard André. Many of these wonderful chromolithographs feature hand-finished color, and were created by some of the best artists and lithographers of the day including A. Goosens, P. De Pannemaeker and J. Goffart. They are on fine woven paper that measures ~ 6 1/2" by 10".
