Description of Giovanni Volpato and Raffaelle Morghen's Principj del Disegno

These magnificent engravings are from the work entitled Principj del Disegno by Giovanni Volpato and Raffaelle Morghen. Originally a trained as a stone mason, Volpato later studied engraving and eventually became a noted Italian sculptor and engraver. After working in Venice creating engravings of famous paintings, he moved to Rome in 1772 and opened a porcelain factory producing small reproductions of classical Roman models. He was a major influence on the coming age of Neoclassical movement, and even Pope Pius VI saw his talents and allowed him to reproduce sculptures from the Vatican in porcelain. Morghen was a well-known Italian engraver who studied with Volpato. Together in 1786, they produced this work of engravings based on celebrated sculptures. They are on fine woven paper that measures ~16 1/4" by 21 3/4".
