Waterloo, Anthonie

Anthonie (Anthony) Waterloo is one of the most influential Dutch masters of the 17th century. Little is known about his life. He was born in Lille in 1610 and moved to Utrecht in 1640, when he eventually settled and died in 1690.

His artistic education is unknown, making it likely that he was mostly self-taught. He created 126 etchings, none of which are dated. He concentrated almost exclusively on portrayals of the landscape. Later, 18th century European artists often attempted to mimic his unique style.

Waterloo etchings were commonly reprinted through the 18th century. The last reprint of any of Waterloo's works was published by Philip G. Hamerton in his work Etchers and Etchings in 1868.

The exactly printing date of the prints we have for sale here is unknown. However, they are on fine, chain-linked paper that points to an 18th century print date, along with at least one watermark date of 1777. Many of the plates also feature the watermark shown below:
