Franz E. Weirotter's Etchings

Franz Edmund Weirotter (1733-1771) was a well-known painter and etcher of the 18th century. Though born in Germany, Weirotter traveled though Europe, learning and expanding his artistic talents with every stop. He studied under German engraver Johann Georg Wille in Paris to which he moved in 1759. Rome influenced the artist with a 2-year stay from 1763-1765. By 1767, Weirotter moved on to Vienna, Austria where he took on the position of rofessor of landscape drawing and painting at the Academy. His life ended four short years later after suffering from aliments to his eyes.

After his death, most of his 288 etched plates were purchased by Basan & Poignant, Parisian publishers. In 1775, they released a large quarto volume of these etchings. The plates for sale here are believed to be from this volume. They are on fine chain-linked paper that measures 14 5/8" by 9 3/4".

Below is what appears to be a page from the Basan volume, paying homage to the late Weirotter.
