These intriguing prints are from the work entitled Physiotypia Plantarum Austriacarum der Naturselbstdruck by Constantin von Ettingshausen and Alois Porkornky. The unique method of nature printing was used to create this work, which has been labeled the “most important work produced by nature printing ever published” (Stafleu). Alois Auer, the inventor of the process produced the plates in Vienna in 1855-56. At the same time Henry Bradbury was using the same technique to produce his well-known works in England. The prints, many featuring several species, have an interesting quality and almost appear as photographs. They are on fine heavy paper that measures approximately 15.5″ by 22.5″.
