Napoleon’s Description of Egypt

These original, large folio, copperplate engravings come from a monumental work entitled Description de l’Egypte ou Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont ete faites en Egypte pendant l’expedition de l’armee Francaise. (Translated Description of Egypt and Collection of Observations and Research that were done in Egypt during the expedition of the French Army.) This famous work was completed under the supervision of Napoleon during his failed venture to rule Egypt. Through his artists such as the renowned Pierre Redoute and Jacques Barraband, and archaeologists, Napoleon was able to compile this massive work on Egypt which comprises of eleven large folio volumes of plates and 26 octavo volumes of text. The plates range in nature from maps, scenes, natural history, statues, and buildings to hieroglyphics and much more. These prints come from the second edition of this work, published in Paris by C.L.F. Panckoucke from 1820-1830. Only one thousand copies of this work were ever produced. When regarding these images, it is not hard to feel the awe that the French Army must have felt as they ventured into Egypt for the first time – as they explored and experienced Egypt’s ancient culture, scenery, wildlife, and heritage. The intricate details of the engravers’ fine work is evident in the zoom-in photos. However, digital photos still don’t reproduce these prints in all their magnificence. There is a publisher’s blind stamp near the upper text – outside of the image. The paper is hand-made, chain-linked, rag paper. The single page images measure ~ 26 1/2″ by 20″, the double page images measure ~ 26 1/2″ by 39″. There are a few that are different sizes, the measurement of each of these is listed on the item’s description page.
